Boom time for palm oiled lilies
Even after all the flooding in England big Gordo's government still plans to build houses in flood prone areas. Don't worry though - planners involved in the massive Thames Gateway project reckon a "holistic" approach should do the trick. Well, that's OK then.
At last some positive news from the wonderful world of super sized supermarkets, Asda - the UK based Wal-Mart spin off - is to ban palm oil from unsustainable sources. The Body Shop has already taken action to source only sustainable produced palm oil.
Friends of the Earth say that demand for the oil from Europe and Asia has seen an area of Rainforest the size of Wales cut down every year in Indonesia alone. The destruction of vast tracts of Rainforest, to make way for palm plantations, is responsible for releasing huge quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere as will as pushing the stars of such films as "Every which way but loose" (not Clint Eastwood, the Orang-utan) to the edge of extinction.
Apropos supermarkets "doing the right thing"; last week we ran a small piece about a possible ban on the British high streets favourite fashion accessory - the plastic bag. Well I'm happy to note that the Swedish cultural icon Ikea has become the first major UK retailer to "ban the bag".
Spotted by Meg in this weeks Observer magazine and surely a top contender for an entry in Private Eye's Pseuds corner:
"Walking a Dior show is one of those rare moments I can really feel as a fashion model, that I have justly earned my bread and honey."
Lily Cole, Observer Magazine, 22nd July
As Meg pointed out, does this mean that when the fragrant Ms Cole does other show's she doesn't really pull her weight?
Leaving a square metre of your garden to grow wild is the ideal way to encourage bio-diversity in your garden. It may also provide an ideal habitat for bees. Pressures on native bee habitats in the UK have seen a massive decline in bee species and numbers (also linked with CCD - colony collapse disorder).

Has Lembit Opik, the fun loving, play boy Lib Dem MP for Montgomeryshire taken the whole "buy one, get one free" thing a little too far? First the Cheeky Girls and now - well, draw your own conclusion by going to page 17 of Private Eye no. 1189.
Dear Alan Rusbridger,
Please stop with the Lily Allen obsession. Your papers seemingly insatiable obsession with mediocre celebrity is slowly driving me mad (I even tried reading the Indy, but they have a Bono/Geldof/Lily obsession, not to mention their children's picture book front pages and single issue editorials). Be brave, follow the lead of Mika Brzezinski (The co-presenter of MSNBC's Morning Joe programme), ditch the botox and get back to some proper reporting.
