...and Trump gets go ahead for environmental destruction
Barack Obama has won the US election, but then you knew that by now. Claiming "change has come to America" (well, to the USA perhaps) Obama announced his arrival. To be honest I should be cynical, I mean can he be any better than the previous administration? OK, so he's the first black US president but what real difference will that make? But I'm hopeful. And I'm hopeful because my daughter (and partner) are American and this seems to be a genuine moment of change across the pond. Here's hoping.
Sadly, here in Scotland a weak and pathetic Scottish Executive (ahh, what hopes I had of you) lead by Alex Salmond have given the go ahead to an environmental and economic travesty - namely Donald Trump's "glorious" golf course. Of which 9 holes are to be built on what even his own environmental experts agree are some of the most valuable sand dunes in Europe. Trump has a rather poor record on such developments while Aberdeen went against it's own rules on green belt developments. Not to mention Alex Salmond being blinded by big bucks and flashy cars and giving Trump the go ahead to build on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs are protected in law - at a European level).
Alex Salmond has often argued for Scottish independence yet based on the Trump debacle he would seem to be a poor choice as a national leader and unsuitable as an upholder of political and legal values in Scotland. In a simple matter of governance (abiding by the rules) he has shown himself to be a short-sighted and impressionable man unable to take the morally and legally correct course of action.
Scotland doesn't need another golf course - we have more than plenty. Trump's development will bring limited long term economic benefits and lead to the environmental destruction of irreplaceable habitats. Shame on you Aberdeenshire (ANNE ROBERTSON in particular). Shame on you Alex Salmon.
