Organic food imports rise

Shoppers would prefer local producers

The Soil Association, Britain's largest Organic certifier, has warned that imports of organic food will have to increase to keep up with consumer demand.

"It is inevitable this year that more (organic) product has been imported into the UK". Helen Browning, food and farming director of the Association. Adding: "There is not enough organic food on the shelf to keep pace with demand. Our hunch is that the market is now constrained by availability".

However, increased imports are leading to environmental concern from consumers with up to 80% of respondents to a Soil Association survey earlier this year citing food miles as a major influence on buying habits; claiming that they would prefer to buy local conventionally produced goods in preference to imported organic.

At Terramar Organics we have been highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to Sustainability; and while we would prefer Organic production to be the norm we believe that local participation is hugely important to developing a sustainable (global) economy.
