CTC awarded 300,000 to raise climate change awareness. Aberdeen city council named in top ten green performance list.
The CTC (the UK's national cyclists' organisation) was awarded a grant of almost 300,000 to raise awareness of climate change amongst cyclists back in October (2006). Some may see this as preaching to the converted: "Cyclists are already ahead of the game every trip we make on the bike rather than the car does something to reduce our own impact." Chris Peck [http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4614].
A statement from the CTC reads: "At the heart of the project will be a thought-provoking short film to be shown this summer [2007] in cinemas and on other media."
The CTC represents 70,000 pleasure and commuter cyclists in the UK and Ireland and has been "getting cyclists on their bikes for128 years". Interestingly the CTC website notes that already back in the day (1896) a Swedish chemist by the name of Svante Arrhenius was already predicting that carbon dioxide emissions from the new fangled automobiles and mass industrialisation would lead to climate change.
As Queen sang: "Get on you your bike and ride" (to beat global warming).
In other (more recent) news Aberdeen city council has been named as on of the UK's best performing councils on green issues (Society Guardian 03.01.07). The city council has switched to green electricity supplies, cut it's carbon emissions by 31% over two years, has a green travel plan for it's council officers and energy efficiency measures have been put in place for council homes. The council also founded a not-for-profit company to develop combined heat and power projects. The Aberdeen Heat and Power company currently provides heat and power for 288 flats across four towers.
Now, if only Aberdeen city would build some proper bike lanes instead of the ridiculously narrow, drain skimming, bus dodging, on street car parking, arbitrarily ending at the narrowest point in a road excuse for a cycle network. Oh yes, and some secure undercover bike storage in the city centre please.
