Cod in crisis (no more fish suppers please, we're saving the Oceans).
Since Tuesday morning the Greenpeace ship "Arctic Sunrise" has been docked in Aberdeen following on from a series of actions in the North Sea to highlight over fishing and the campaign to establish international marine reserves.
We were lucky to be invited onboard for a tour of the ship. It was fantastic to be shown around, and to get an idea of what life is like on board and how the campaigns work. And of course meeting some of the activists who have been bobbing across broadcast and deadwood news in their bright red survival suits over the past week and a bit.
The media in Aberdeen has been covering the activities of the crew and campaigners onboard "Arctic Sunrise" quite a bit, but what proved most interesting about our visit was the video footage we were shown.
If you watch the local TV news the Greenpeace campaigners are made to look as though they are highly irresponsible by floating about in the path of the fishing boats, however, when you view the unedited stock footage (the same footage which the broadcasters use and then re-edit) a very different picture emerges; a picture in which the campaigners emerge as sensible and dedicated individuals who are very professional in their approach to the local fishing boats. Actually common sense tells you that the media is biased towards the sensational but still, it's helpful to get all sides of the picture.
As Gog's put it (and I'm paraphrasing a little) "It was great to meet them because you saw how professional they are", to which Simeon added, "yeah, the're not just a bunch of hippies jumping in the way of oil rigs" (again, I'm paraphrasing a little).
There's more information on Cod in crisis on the Greenpeace site, and hopefully I'll have a couple of pictures to show you all soon.
