This Saturday was the Environment Day hosted by Newton Dee CVT. The focus of the day being The Environment there were talks and stalls from several organisations and companies involved in promoting ecological and social awareness. Contributors included Colin Howden from Transform Scotland [http://www.transformscotland.org.uk/] who talked on the need for a more forward thinking transport policy in Scotland and the Aberdeen area.
The men from SCARF (c'mon it has that James Bond ring to it) reminded everyone that there are plenty of small steps we can all take to help the environment. Such as turning TVs and other electronic kit off rather than to standby. For computer users who wish to have the benefit of standby I would recommend enabling hibernate. The real message from SCARF is common sense. Namely that it is far more important to reduce overall power consumption and to use what we do use efficiently than to only try to source renewable energy.
Unfortunately, I missed Thomas Balls' (Newton Dee CVT) introduction to freecycle.org. It's fantastic, I urge you to give it a look. If you like the one stop multi-coloured swap shop known as eBay, you'll love this. Basically, people get together online to swap stuff they no longer need/want. Best of all it's free!
I addressed several issues surrounding the organic and fair trade movements, most notably the need for fair trade and organics to be viewed as two sides of the Sustainable coin; and the need for consumers to better educate themselves and to rely less on labelling and begin to build "local trust relationships" with producers.
That's almost all for now folks, just time to face an inescapable truth - Christmas is most definitely with us. Here at Terramar Organics we have avoided hanging out the bunting for as long as possible; come next week however, look out for Christmas at Terramar.
