Britain fails to follow swarm

No pesticide ban despite action elsewhere in Europe

The British government has been widely criticised this week after it’s failure to ban or even restrict neonicotinoid in pesticides. The chemical insecticide is used extensively in farming and is widely thought to have contributed to CCD (colony collapse disorder) in bee populations world wide.

As a class of insecticide neonicotinoid is designed to act on the central nervous system of insects. It is modelled on nicotine targeting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors which are in high densities in insect nervous tissue.

Hilary Benn (environment secretary) claimed in a letter to the Soil Association that there was no evidence that pesticides caused CCD. The use of neonicotinoid insecticides has already been restricted in Slovenia, Italy, France and Germany.
