Plastic bag ban binned

A bill to ban plastic bags is being proposed by the 33 London councils. The bill will be put before MP's in November. According to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) British consumers are estimated to use 167 plastic carrier bags per person annually; most of this 10 billion total end up in landfill where experts believe that it can take up to 500 years for them to degrade.

An alternative to an outright ban is the levying of a charge for each bag, with the money collected being used by local councils.

DEFRA, amongst others, is opposed to any outright ban or levy on plastic bags preferring to negotiate a reduction in the number of bags given out by retailers.
