Support Alan Johnston

Terramar Organics would like to offer our support for the kidnapped BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston, his family and friends. Mr Johnston disappeared on March 12, 2007, on his way home in Gaza City. He is thought to be the only Western Journalist actively reporting from Gaza. It is unclear exactly who abducted Mr Johnston though claims have been made by the Tawhid and Jihad Brigades, both of which are unknown militant groups.

Alan Johnston has been reporting from Gaza for the BBC for the last three years.

Alan was educated at the University of Jute, Jam and Journalism (Dundee) in Scotland; and has reported for BBC news from a selection of the worlds more troubled spots including Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Kabul, the Afghan capital, when it was controlled by the Taleban.

In January 2006 he reported on abductions in Gaza, noting that "the kidnap craze has thrown up moments of black humour." And that the root cause of many kidnappings was a desire for employment in "this poverty-stricken place, and usually they want to be allowed to join the security services." He went on to comment that:

"Gaza is the only place in the world where your kidnapper's one demand is that he should be allowed to become a policeman."

According to the BBC website:

"There has also been a spate of kidnappings targeting foreigners - although all have been released unharmed."

The freedom of journalists to report unhindered is of paramount importance in a deeply fragment world. We hope that Mr Johnston is released soon.
