Toxic electronics report

Greenpeace have released the second edition of their Green Electronics Guide. The report ranks the leading mobile phone and home PC manufacturers on their use of toxic chemicals, their policies and practices in eliminating harmful chemicals from production and on whether the company takes responsibility for their products once discarded by consumers.

Nokia comes out top with a score of 7.3 ranking "good" in all areas, while Apple "scores low on almost all criteria" and shows "no progress," ending up at the bottom of the pile with a mere 2.7 ranking.

Of the PC manufacturers Dell scores highest with 7 but "[l]oses points for not having models free of the worst chemicals. Strong support for takeback." While Fujitsu-Siemens scores 6 - "High score on chemical policy, some models free of worst chemicals. But should improve takeback and recycling." Of other major brands both Sony (5) and Panasonic (4.3) fair poorly.

It should be noted that this report doesn't consider other environmental factors such as energy efficiency. The full report showing the rankings of 14 major manufacturers can be found here.
