GM consultation

The introduction of GM crops into the UK poses a threat to GM-free crops (both organic and conventional). The precise risks are still not clear, but the potential implications for GM-free conventional and organic farming are well documented. There are also possible health concerns as, for example, are discussed here:
https://www.soilassociation.org/web/sa/saweb.nsf/supermarketfeedback!openform

Once GM crops have been introduced into the ecosystem it is widely recognised that there will be contamination of GM-free crops. And, when a crop has become contaminated the contamination cannot be undone.

A consultation is currently underway into the quot;Proposals for managing the coexistence of GM, conventional and organic crops" in England consultations will follow for Nothern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).
For further information and useful links regarding the consultation follow this link:
http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2006/060720a.htm

The consultation is based on the proposals of the EU Commission to to allow a margin of 0.9% accidental GM contamination of crops within the EU, crops which would otherwise be GM-free. Furthermore, this would require an amendment to EC Regulation 2092/91 on Organic Production of Agricultural Products (the legal basis on which European standards of organic agriculture are based) to allow for this potential contamination of organic crops.

The UK has said no to GMOs in the past - lets hear it again. Have your say by contacting the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to let them know that you want your right to GM-free food protected. (Please note: the deadline for responses to the consultation is 20th October 2006.)

Information regarding GM crops can be accessed from many organisations on the web. Some sources of particular interest are:
